Community Education

UAMS South aims to promote healthy living throughout the communities that we serve. Our school-based outreach efforts include healthy eating presentations in many local elementary school classrooms in Magnolia, El Dorado, Camden and Norphlet as well as a special kindergarten program called OrganWise Guys. UAMS South typically serves more than 1,800 students each year with these programs.

UAMS South also implements a program called Safety Baby Showers that was created by Arkansas Children’s Hospital. This program educates expectant parents on car seat safety, injury prevention, and safe sleeping conditions for infants. Through partnerships with the Blue & You Foundation and the State Farm Foundation, UAMS South has served hundreds of local parents with this program.

Health Screenings are also an important component of our outreach efforts. Through various grants, UAMS South provides free community health screenings (including blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar) to help participants take charge of their health. Participants learn about risk factors for chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease, and also learn about lifestyle changes they can make to reduce their risk of developing these.

The Stanford Diabetes Self Management Program is offered by trained facilitators at UAMS South. This program teaches diabetics (and those caring for diabetics) how to effectively manage their disease and symptoms. This six week program empowers participants with strategies for dealing with the daily struggles that can come from living with a chronic condition. If interested in attending this program, contact Ashley Gray 870-234-7676 ext. 1228.

Our goal is to promote and facilitate cooperation and coordination among communities, health care providers, educational institutions and health-related organizations. Current programs include TOUCH (Tremendous Opportunity for Union County Health) Coalition, HEALTH Coalition in Columbia County, QUAD CO (Calhoun, Dallas, Ouachita, and Union County Arkansas Delta Rural Development Network), and Union County LEPC (Local Emergency Planning Committee).
